Coffee shops and cafés

Coffee shop loyalty card, in your regulars' Wallet.

The 10th coffee free, without a paper card to forget or an app to push. Customers scan the QR code at the counter, the card goes into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, and you stamp it from your own phone while the shot pulls.

The reward

The free coffee that brings them back for the first nine.

Coffee is a daily habit, which makes it the business where a punch card works best. Three formats we see working, each one a setting, and you can change it later without your customers redoing anything.

10th coffee free

The format everyone understands without reading. Ten boxes, the last one is a gift: a regular fills it in a few weeks.

Two tiers on one card

A coffee at 5 visits, a pastry at 10. The first reward comes fast and hooks people who'd otherwise drop off early.

A card that doesn't start at zero

The card arrives with its welcome stamp already on it. A card that's already started gets finished more often than an empty one.

Write the reward precisely ("any 12 oz drink"), or every free coffee becomes the most expensive drink on your menu.

At the counter

Built for the morning rush.

Stamps happen in front of a line. Everything is designed so it takes two seconds and never lands on the wrong customer.

  1. 1They show their cardYour customer opens their Wallet. You aim your phone at the code, like taking a photo.

  2. 2You add the stampThe screen shows who it is and where they're at. One tap to confirm, nothing goes through on its own.

  3. 3Their card updates instantlyThe stamp shows up on their phone, and their lock screen tells them.

One scan, one confirmPoint at the card, the screen shows the first name and the new count, you confirm. Nothing goes through on its own.

No double stampsTwo scans less than a minute and a half apart count once. You can change that delay, or turn it off.

The whole team can stampYour baristas scan from their own phones, invited by a link. They only see the scanner, not your numbers or your customer list.

What paper can't do

A card that works the afternoon slump too.

The punch card keeps its simplicity. What changes is that it lives on your customer's phone, and it can talk to them.

A message when the room is empty"New cold brew on tap this week" on the lock screen of people who carry your card: a useful note on a slow Tuesday, instead of a discount.

Win back the ones drifting awayA regular who hasn't been in for weeks gets a note, automatically. On the Growth plan.

Know who your regulars areHow many cards, how many visits, who comes back and who drops off: the dashboard tells you. A shoebox of paper cards never did.

Google reviews, at the right momentA link to your Google listing, sent to your loyal customers rather than anyone. On the Growth plan.

Gift cards

Gift a coffee, no paper voucher.

Sell a gift card at the counter, for a cappuccino or for an amount. StampyWallet sends it to the person receiving it by email, or by text where texting is available, with the buyer's note. They add it to their Wallet and come spend it with you. On the Growth plan.

Questions

What coffee shops ask us.

How many stamps should a coffee shop loyalty card have?

Eight to ten for a daily or near-daily coffee, so a regular finishes a card in three to five weeks. A study in a real café (Kivetz, Urminsky and Zheng, Journal of Marketing Research, 2006) found customers came back more often the closer they got to the free coffee: a card that's too long loses that pull.

Do my customers need to download an app?

No. They scan the QR code at the counter and tap "Add": the card goes into Apple Wallet on iPhone or Google Wallet on Android. Without a Wallet, the same card opens in the browser, with the same stamps.

Do I need a tablet or a terminal at the counter?

No. Your phone is enough: open a web page, the camera opens, scan the customer's card. If the network drops during service, the stamp goes through as soon as it's back, never twice.

Can the reward be something other than a coffee?

Yes. The reward is text you write: a drink, a pastry, a cookie. You can also put two tiers on the same card, or count points if your tickets vary a lot.

How much does a digital coffee punch card cost?

Essential is $29 a month before tax (£19 in the UK, €20 in Europe): unlimited customers, Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, scanning and messages to all your customers. Growth, at $49 (£35, €40), adds automatic reminders, birthdays and Google review requests. 30 days free, no commitment, no setup fee.

What happens to the cards if I cancel?

They stay on your customers' phones with their stamps, and you can keep stamping. You can export your customers as a CSV whenever you like.

Your coffee shop's card can exist in five minutes.

Long enough to add your logo, write your reward and print the poster. Your first regular can add it tomorrow morning.
