A bookstore loyalty card that knows what a book costs.

Updated

Regulars drop in for the book club pick, special-order the memoir they heard on a podcast, and buy a stack of picture books in December. Their card lives on their phone, counts the receipt rather than the visit, and pays back a share you decided you can afford.

What loyalty card works for an independent bookstore?

One that counts dollars, not visits. A reader who buys a $9 paperback and one who buys a $45 art book should not earn the same reward, and a free book every tenth purchase quietly hands back about 10% of your sales. StampyWallet lets you type the book total before scanning: one stamp per $20 spent, and a $10 reward on the tenth stamp, so the card returns 5%. Readers keep it in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet with no app. As of October 22, 2026, it costs $29 a month before tax in the US (€20 excl. VAT in Europe), $49 with scheduled messages to announce new releases, after a 30-day trial.

StampyWallet is a digital loyalty card for independent shops, bookstores included. Readers add it to their phone from a QR code by the register; a bookseller scans it, enters the amount, and the card updates on its own. You choose the dollars per stamp, the reward value and an optional second row for gifts and stationery.

5% backTen stamps at $20 each, then $10 off: half of what a free tenth book costs you.

By the receiptA $9 paperback and a $45 hardcover no longer earn the same stamp. Amounts round down.

Two rowsBooks on one row, cards, puzzles and journals on the other, each with its own reward.

The reward

What reward should a bookstore offer?

Store credit sized to the books it took to earn it. Three setups follow; each is a setting you change from your phone, and readers' cards update by themselves.

Ten stamps, $10 off

Set "$20 = 1 stamp". A $22 novel earns one stamp, a $43.90 haul earns two. The tenth stamp means at least $200 of books, and the $10 credit appears on the card.

A point per dollar, two tiers

In points mode, 100 points unlock $5 off and 200 points unlock $10 off. Readers watch the ring fill after every purchase.

A row for sidelines

Totes, journals, cards and games run on a second row of the same card. Eight purchases there earn a free notebook, and the book count stays clean.

Write "$10 off books, in store" on the card rather than "5% back": readers see what they get, and you avoid stacking it with a coupon on the same title.

What the reward really costs

No fixed book price here, so you set the rate.

In the US, list prices are suggestions and every store picks its own discounts. That freedom cuts both ways: a reward that sounds modest can eat a margin that is already thin. The card shows the real rate before you print the sign.

Credit, not a free bookA free tenth book returns about 10% of what the reader spent. Ten dollars on $200 returns 5%, and rounding down to the stamp can only keep you under it.

The amount goes in firstSettings › "$20 = 1 stamp". Leftover dollars are not carried over: $43.90 earns two stamps, not two and a bit.

France and Spain cap it at 5%If you also run a store abroad: French and Spanish law fix the book price and limit the bookseller's discount, loyalty included, to 5%. The same settings stay within it.

Used books on their own rowIf you sell used copies with a different margin, give them the second row so the two counts never mix.

At the register

Type the total, then scan.

The bookseller enters the amount before aiming at the code. The screen shows how many stamps it adds, the reader pockets the phone, the line keeps moving.

The big release

The next volume, reserved before it ships.

A prize winner, book three of a young adult series, a local author's debut: tell everyone who holds your card, on the day and hour you pick. They reserve in the store or by phone, and you order the right number of copies from the distributor.

One announcement, on the day you pickFrom Messages, write two sentences: the release date and how to reserve. It goes out on the day and hour you choose, on your readers' lock screens. On the Growth plan.

Book, on the back of the cardPut your number or link in the card's contact details and a Book button appears on the back. You log reservations the way you do today and order the right number of copies from the distributor.

The author event, sent aheadWrite it Monday, and it reaches readers' lock screens Thursday at 10 a.m.: "Reading and signing Saturday at 4." Scheduled messages come with Growth.

Reserving earns no discountThe book is paid at your price on pickup, and stamps post like any other purchase.

Gift cards

Give books without picking the title.

Sell a gift card for an amount at the register: the aunt who has no idea what her nephew reads, a coworker's farewell, a teacher at the end of the year. StampyWallet sends it by email, or by text where texting is available, with the buyer's note. It lands in the recipient's Wallet and is spent down across visits. On the Growth plan.

Questions

What booksellers ask us.

Should I give away every tenth book?

You can, but it gives back about 10% of what the reader spent, and on a $30 hardcover that is real money. A $10 credit for $200 of books, or $5 for $100, gives back 5% and still feels generous.

Can the card count only books and not coffee from our cafe corner?

Yes: you type the amount you want to count before scanning. Leave the coffee out, or give sidelines their own row with a separate reward.

How do special orders and reservations work with stamps?

Stamp them when the reader picks up the book and pays. Reserving a copy, in the store or by phone, earns nothing on its own, so nobody is rewarded twice.

Do my readers need to download an app?

No. They scan the QR code by the register and tap Add: the card goes into Apple Wallet on iPhone or Google Wallet on Android. Without a wallet, the same card opens in the browser.

Can I tell readers about an author signing?

Yes. A message to everyone who has your card appears on their lock screen, from the Essential plan. With Growth you write it ahead and pick the day and time it goes out.

What if I sell used books too?

Give them the second row of the card, with their own reward, so the margin on used copies and the count on new books stay apart.

How much does StampyWallet cost a bookstore?

As of October 22, 2026, Essential is $29 a month before tax in the US and Growth is $49, which adds scheduled messages and gift cards (€20 and €40 excl. VAT in Europe). The first month is free with no commitment; if you stop, cards stay on readers' phones with their stamps.
